While all of her books explore these themes, OTHER BIRDS feels especially poignant, since the young main protagonist, Zoey, has had a very complicated family life (as have all of the characters, in one way or another), and so she sets herself to creating found family in the new home she finds herself in, though it happens naturally, and everyone around her kind of opens their petals to her warm, friendly sunshine. I love how she somehow conceives of the perfect magical elements to tie all the pieces of her stories together, providing the perfect dollop of enchantment to tales that speak to more realistic kinds of magic, like love, home, family, friendship, community and belonging. I just love her beautiful books, her gentle magic, her gorgeous writing.
